A VBA Function To Get A Value From A Closed File. Category: VBA Functions VBA does not include a method to retrieve a value from a closed file. You can, however, take advantage of Excel's ability to work with linked files. This tip contains a VBA function that retrieves a value from a closed workbook. It does by calling an XLM macro. I have a working code to retrieve a specific cell in a closed workbook when I specify the directory. I'm trying to get this code to loop through all the existing workbooks in said directory, retrieving the same cell from each file. This is the code I have so far with the loop (I'm including the function used as well).
You can do this without VBA, if you want to. Open up your source workbook, Copy the cells you want to see and use Paste Special- Paste Link to put them into another workbook. Upon opening the 'destination' workbook, you will be asked if you wish to update the links, just click on 'Yes'. Note that the cells will return a zero if they are empty, you can wrap an If statement around your link to show empty cells as empty if you want to.
