The first year of Gibson solidbodies was 1952, and Gibson didn't use any serial number in 1952. Starting in 1953, the first number is the last number of the year. If the ink stamped number consists of 5 digits, there will be a space between the first and second numbers (separating the last digit of the year from the actual serial number). The Gibson EB-3. The headstock had a crown inlay, and the rosewood fingerboard joined the body at the 17th fret. Standard finish was Cherry, both had dot inlays and a one-piece bridge/tailpiece with an angled portion for compensation. The EB-3’s hardware also included a handrest and string mute.
Hey all,I have been wanting a vintage Gibson EB-3 bass ever since I got into Cream way back when I was 16 (so 13 years ago) and today I had what I feel is the perfect bass fall into my lap. It's a 1969 EB-3, with what appears to be original pickups and tuners, no headstock breaks or cracks, body and neck both appear sound with no issues.it plays phenomenal and I'm not a bass person really.the only issues with it is at some point a previous owner stripped it down to the bare wood including the black background on the headstock face. Luckily, they left the Gibson logo and holly head intact.however, they're quite raised up.The knobs, p/u selector switch and possibly bridge are not original, but everything else appears to be. I have taken photos which I will post shortly. The shop is asking $999.99 for it.what do you all think? Does this sound like a good price or should I offer less?I've searched and not been able to find much on the value of vintage Gibson EB-3s that have had their finish removed. Thanks all very much in advance!Ok here are the pics. I don't know for sure, but I seem to feel that I've seen that instrument here in the emporium and many people raised red flags about it at that time. I'm certainly no expert, but the headstock seems to be too small for that type/year.
If you do a Google image search for 1969 EB-3, you'll see much wider headstocks, and if you do a general search for EB-3, you'll see some small headstocks but without the crown inlay. Also, the D tuner looks crooked in the picture of the back of the headstock, and both the E and the D seem to be obscurring the serial number. My advice would be to see if you know anyone that does know these instruments well and can inspect the guts, etc., to make sure that you're getting the real deal. Also, look very closely to see if there are any breaks that just don't appear at first glance. I have a '68 SG that was stripped in that fashion, but it had a break at the heel that was very crudely repaired, although the guitar only cost me $200 back in 1972.
If there are problems with the bass, but you still like it enough to buy it without needing to have a decent resale value (I still have my SG), I'd say that's not a horrible price for some old wood and you might be able to change out the electronics if it doesn't sound great. Perhaps you can even talk them down a few dollars more. Good luck!MikeEdit: 11:33PMJust for fun, here's an example of a '69 EB-3 with plenty of nice pictures to see. Headstock definitely looks off, unless someone can verify that they made different sizes for them during that/those years. I've played this exact bass in the store a couple times.
It sounds and feels great but there is something wonky about it.I don't doubt that it's a Gibson but I wouldn't be surprised if it has had the neck replaced. The rotary is also after market.
It actually didn't work when I first played it but they have since resoldered it.It's only worth $1k if you think so. You won't get that out of it if you decide to resale. I've seen them in better condition go for $500.
I offered $300 jokingly and the saleman said they had $900 in it so he could only go that low. Yeah I bet. That same store has had that Bedrock tube amp setting there for over a year that they refuse to budge on.If you don't care about the logo Coleman's has an asian EB-3 copy that kills for a great price. Back about 10 years ago I have a friend that was selling one with Ampeg flip top amp and I don't play base was dying to buy that. It was played a few times and person was probably like in high school, lost interest and looked brand new.
It sold on Ebay for about $700- $800. I so much wanted to buy it. I don't know, but I don't think guitars prices went up that much in 10 years.I would not be surprised it it is not original neck. I have stripped/refinished a couple of guitars and that gooky jelly stuff I think would have damaged that logo and crown thingy.
I worked on melody makers and they had decals which of course disappeared.Check this out for comparison.
Up for sale is my 1968 Gibson EB-0 bass. It has the rare slotted headstock. Even rarer in the fact that it has never been broken or repaired. This bass is rock solid!
All electronics and hardware are 100% original to this guitar. The original'mudbucker' sounds incredible and delivers that thick Jack Bruce tone in spades. The shorter scale neck is straight with low action and offers easy playability up and down the neck. Frets are also in good shape with a lot of life left. Tuners hold perfectly.
All electronics function great with only a little scratch in the tone pot. The rare side mounted output jack could use tightening. But that's it.
The original brown finish is in great shape with only normal wear and nice checking. This is a great piece that would compliment anyone's collection, but could still gig every night. Good luck bidding! PLEASE READ ENTIRE AD BEFORE BIDDING AND NOTE THE PICTURES! Rare vintage piece alert! This is a Gibson EB-0 Walnut bass with the slotted headstock. Made in 1970 in the USA.
This particular bass will need to be restored. I hope the pictures can speak to the condition of the bass, but I will also do my best to describe it too. It has had the frets sanded down to make it fretless. Half of the 14th'fret' has been removed.
The bridge cover, saddles, truss rod cover, lower strap button, and 1 pickguard screw are missing. It's has extra holes drilled where both strap buttons are. There is plenty of wear and checking and well a few dings, chips and scratches, but nothing that greatly compromises the bass(I.E. It wasn't dropped or anything, just lots of wear) None of the wood appears to be cracked. Electronics appear to. Work as they should, though it obviously has not been strung up to verify if the pots are scratchy. A very small part of the'Gibson' inlay on the headstock has been chipped off.
The serial number is 959002. I do not have a case for it. With a little work, you will have the bee's knees of Gibson tone monster basses, and will just kill it on stage. The headstock is what really makes these models stand out, they were not made for a long time or in high numbers, so don't expect one of these to be rolling around soon. This is a no refunds auction so please don't hesitate to ask any and all questions that you may have or for more pictures and I will get back to you ASAP! Thanks for looking and happy bidding!

At least 25 years ago. Cosmetically the repair is not visible unless examined at very close range. Structurally, the neck has held solid for over 25 years with no signs of movement. This is a very cool bass: short scale. Tiny neck and absolutely HUGE sound! They only made the slotted headstock version of this guitar for two years 1969 to 1971 and you rarely see one that hasn't been broken, this one is fully intact and plays amazing, the action is very low and superlight and it even has the original factory hardshell case, in really good shape for its age! These guitars often can fetch up to $3000, however I am pricing this as a players guitar, not a museum piece as it has somewhat of an interesting history: the guitar was received without any of the original pickups or electronics or a bridge, someone had put slightly larger pickups in the guitar at one point and then removed them(and possibly a larger pick guard, which also had been removed and the additional holes that were drilled it were already filled fairly. Thank you for viewing my auction!

It includes a Gibson hardshell case. On the back of the headstock is the serial# 955871. As well as a'MADE IN USA' inscription. According to the Gibson website. Basses manufactured from 1970-1972 used the serial numbers 100000s, 600000s, 700000s, 900000s.
The site states: In 1970. The words'MADE IN USA' was impressed into the back of instrument headstocks(though a few instruments from the 1950s also had MADE IN USA impressed into their headstocks as well) Based on the information above. I believe this instrument to be made in 1970.
I bought this bass in the early to mid-2000's from a guitar shop in Brooklyn. NY and it promptly went into my closet, to re-emerge a decade later. Recall what it sounds like and I don't have any amps having sold all my equipment over the years.
I personally have never modified it, nor have I ever taken it apart. It has the usual wear and tear of an instrument that is 44 years old. I'm hoping it will live on in good hands for at least that much more! The only major flaw that I can see is that at some point someone drilled a hole in the top horn presumably to put a strap button in there. Thanks for looking and rock on!
